  1. Problem:

Prospective and current learners don’t have a central place to go to for advice, encouragement, inspiration, and connection to others going through similar academic journeys.

    • Survey Responses:
      • When you do not have a single point of contact you get mixed on where to go. Without a feeling of connectedness one is less motivated and more likely not to persist.
      • I imagine it'd be helpful for learners who are juggling multiple priorities--and I imagine it's a major problem for some to not have a sense of community.
      • Online is a lonely business - anything we can do to increase the personal contact is going to make the entire experience better.
    • 60% think it’s a problem that should be solved.
  2. Overview:

Capella’s Constellation Builder is a website where alumni, current and prospective learners can connect to others who have gone through, or are going through, similar academic journeys and facing similar struggles; to be inspired and motivated, and get support for their professional and academic questions.

    • Any user can browse, search, and filter user profiles by any data entered including: demographics, academic program, career, interests, skills, responses to advice questions, etc…
    • Any user can ask questions of any registered user who has volunteered as a"guide".
    • Users who choose to complete a profile can respond in text and/or video format to scripted questions aimed at their demographic (alumni, new learner, recent graduate, etc…), to help tell learners’ stories and inspire current and prospective learners.
    • Users with profiles can view other users (and their profile) with whom they share similar data in a "constellation network", which can then be filtered and sliced.
  3. Business Value:
    • Value add for: Visitor’s Center, What Can I Do With a Career In?, Capella Results, Alumni Association, Advising/Coaching, etc…
    • Increase conversion rates for prospective learners.
    • Increase completion and persistence rates for current learners.
    • Keep alumni involved; increase alumni re-enrollment.
    • Build the Capella community.
  4. Mary's User Story:

A 32-year-old living in Atlanta, Mary is enrolled in Capella's Nursing program.

She's married with two young children. Her husband was just discharged from the military and is freelancing in IT.

Works as a supervisor at a large shipping facility, where she’s worked since she was 19. It’s been a stable, dependable income for her and her family, but she needed a more challenging career and a better income so she enrolled in the BSN two years ago

Mary finds her nursing course work challenging and interesting, but the time required to balance her studies, job and kids has become stressful (her husband helps, but sometimes must work overtime); so much so that she’s wondering if she’s even on the right track and if all the effort is worth it. She's had one conversation with her advisor about slowing down or taking a break; the options

  5. Her advisor also sends her a link to Capella’s new “Constellation Builder”, where she can search for others who might have advice on work, life, and learning balance.

  6. On the home page, Mary sees profiles of other prospects, learners and alumni that have registered on the site

  7. (FYI: prospects may ask questions and pick best answers to their questions, but only learners and alumni can complete advice interviews and offer to be "guides")

  8. She searches for "time management" and filters for people in her program with full time jobs and kids, and looks through the time management and life balance answers from their profile's advice interviews.

Type: "time managment" into the search field to watch the constellation highlight

  9. She's inspired by the creativity of learners who are doing clever things with technology and apps.

One learner's video details how he uses an app with his computer's text-to-speech features to record mp3s so he can listen to his digital course reading materials while driving or doing chores.

She gets dozens of tips for flash card apps (memorizing medical info is just killing her) and even apps that can help her get full papers outlined and started on her phone!

  10. After watching a few videos, the site prompts her to complete her profile in order to see everyone she’s connected to in her constellation. She was impressed with the advice she saw so far so she completes her profile to get complete access.
